What’s the Shape of Courage?
Earlier this week I wrote about roaring versus regulation in human interaction. That reflection led me to think about sound waves.
If you look at a waveform, reactivity appears as spikes. It is sharp, irregular, loud. Rhythm appears as pattern and cadence.
Both carry energy. Only one carries shape.
The difference between reactive and rhythmic energy is not the absence of power. It is the presence of pace and timing.
Reactive energy surges without pause. Rhythmic energy moves and holds with intention and clarity of purpose. It calls us into movement that makes sense to both body and mind.
Music without rhythm overwhelms. It becomes noise. Rhythm organizes energy so that people can move together.
Courage works the same way.
Courage is not about volume. It is strength guided by wisdom. It is disciplined power that allows good-hearted people to move well together.
Power animated by reactivity can become dangerous. Power expressed rhythmically (collectively) includes rather than excludes. It invites participation rather than submission.
These reflections have been humming in my head this week as I wrestle with how inner peace and inner power show up publicly as shared peace and collective power with and through relationships rather that power over anyone.
And it gives me reason for hope.
